Animated Smileys And Their Humble Beginnings
Animated smileys have expanded into more sophisticated icons from their humble beginnings as
plain graphic ones. In fact they used to be generated from punching 3 keys on the keyboard to make up something
that resembles a smiling face.
The so-called primitive smiley first appeared when it was used to show that a message was not to be taken
seriously.
On the other hand, a frowning face indicated that a message was more serious. If you think this is interesting,
there are even more interesting things you can get out of the modern smileys today. Let’s talk more about these
modern smileys.
Today, smileys have developed into something more complex. Combinations of keys punched in onto the keyboard
were then being used to indicate more than just the ordinary smiley face. At first, there was the colon, dash and
close parenthesis that made up the standard smiley. Then the semicolon was used to indicate a winking smiley
face.
As time went by different symbols have come up and as a result, a wide variety of meanings were generated. There
were those that indicated, jokes, happiness and pleasure. In the opposite sense, there were those that indicated
sadness and frustration. Even the symbols that were previously used were replaced by other symbols.
Despite the variations though, people wanted something more expressive. Simple colons and special keys just
didn’t cut it anymore. Thus the more complex graphic smileys were developed. The tiny yellow-colored faces were
some of the first ever graphic smileys developed. An artist named Harvy Ball was said to have come up with static
smiley images. Soon enough everyone would be using these static smileys in their MSN and YM conversations. They
were eventually placed in icon menus in E-mails.
Still, everyone wanted more, and finally, the animated smileys were developed. animated smileys can do so much
more than the primitive smileys that first came out. Not only can they express over 10 emotions but they can do so
well over 100! They are considered to have very humanlike movements compared to the static yellow smileys. In fact
they can do all sorts of things like jump around, blush and blow a trumpet!
